The image of the Lady and the Dragon appears in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation. It concludes the series on the Biblical Virgin Mary, with an image that transcends the young girl from Nazareth, to a personification and symbol of God’s Plan of Salvation. While not an outright portrayal of the Virgin Mary, Mary has become associated with the Woman of the Apocalypse, who symbolizes, among other things, the Cosmic Order of God’s Creation, at odds with the forces of Cosmic Discorder, God’s protection of His Holy People, and the Birth and Persecution of His Son’s Holy People, the Church.

At the centre of this coin, both literarily and ideologically, stands the “mythic” scene of the woman and the dragon. The woman gives birth to a male child who is threatened by a dragon, identified as the Devil and Satan. The Devil intends to devour the child as soon as he is born.
