Impression, Sunrise by Claude Monet — the painting that transformed a fleeting view of Le Havre into the name of an artistic revolution. Painted in 1872 from a window of the Hôtel de l’Amirauté, it captures the outer harbor at dawn, where cranes, masts, and rowboats dissolve into mist, while a small orange sun burns above the water.

Exhibited in 1874 with the independent artists who would become known as the Impressionists, the work gave the movement its name after critic Louis Leroy turned Monet’s title into a label. What began as a quick impression of morning light became a manifesto for seeing: not the fixed outline of the world, but the sensation of an instant. Its orange sun appears to pierce the mist through color alone, nearly disappearing in black and white.

Created as a special commemorative coin in memory of Claude Monet, this release honors 100 years of the artist’s enduring legacy.

This 1 oz .999 fine silver coin in proof quality uses full-color digital printing to carry Monet’s haze, reflected light, and orange accent onto metal. Only 1,000 pieces are available worldwide, bringing the dawn of Impressionism into the MINT XXI Art Gallery collection.
