A Cosmic Coin from the Dawn of the Solar System

Asteroids are fragments of rock billions of years old, remnants from the formation of our solar system. When they collide in the vast belt between Mars and Jupiter, their broken pieces can be hurled as meteorites all the way to Earth — some 330 million kilometres away. That is precisely what happened on 12 February 1947 in the Sikhote-Alin mountain range of Siberia: a blazing fireball tore across the peaks at an estimated 50,000 km/h, leaving a smoke trail more than 30 kilometres long across the sky. This meteorite, weighing approximately 100 tonnes, shattered in Earth’s atmosphere and rained countless fragments down onto the ground below.

From this cosmic messenger, the meteorite coin Out of Space was born. To preserve the original structure of the metal, the mint masters cut each blank one by one from a meteorite fragment using a specially hardened tungsten wire — leaving the natural fissures and corrosion marks entirely intact.

Even the dimensions of this masterpiece are no coincidence: a diameter of 26 millimetres and a thickness of 6 millimetres pay tribute to the largest impact crater left by the Sikhote-Alin meteorite — 26 metres across and 6 metres deep. The intricate design depicts a stargazer tracing the luminous trails of meteorites through his telescope. Thanks to a high-quality colour application, these trails appear remarkably lifelike — and the largest of these fireballs even glow in the dark, made possible by a spectacular and extraordinarily elaborate glow-in-the-dark effect.
